Fifth Universalist Church is dedicated.

February 28, 1839

(Feb.) Architect: Asher Benjamin. Designed in the Greek Revival style, it is located at 74 Warrenton Street. Otis Skinner is the first minister. The congregation was established in January 1836. The building becomes the home to Boston first synagogue in 1864,* a Scottish Presbyterian Church from 1889 to 1925, and the YWCA. During Prohibition, it is home to a series of nightclubs, including Southland in the 1930s, the Lido Venice, and the Rio Casino from 1941 to 1952. It becomes home to the Charles Playhouse in 1958.*
